#22Joy dipped her brush into the paint and carefully painted the fri st piece of tin.

#23This roof has to look perfect, Joy said to herself as she turned to dip her brush again.

#24When she turned back, Magoo was sitting on the freshly painted tin.

#25Magoo! she said.

#26It's wet paint!

#27Magoo got up and licked Joy's face, his blue tail wagging happily.

#28Get out of here, cried Joy.

#29You'll spill the paint.

#30Magoo leaped back and sat down again.

#31Good boy, said Joy.

#32Magoo watched Joy paint.

#33His eyes were fixed on the brush as it moved back and forth.

#34Then he reached out and touched the brush with his paw.

#35Stop! cried Joy.

#36Do you want to be a blue Magoo?

#37The dog pulled back his blue paw and gave Joy a sorry look.

#38By noon the steps were finished, the tin pieces were painted, and Dad was building the walls.

#39Joy and Magoo were lying in the grass.

#40They were both covered with paint: her shirt, his paws, her knees, his tail, her chin, his ear.

#41But Joy didn't care.

#42The tree house would be finished soon!

#43The next afternoon, Dad put in the door and the window.

#44Finally he nailed down the roof.

#45It's done!

#46shouted Joy.

#47Katie, Mom, and Grandpa ran from the house to see.

#48Mom brought a flowerpot filled with daisies.

#49Put it in the bucket, Mom!

#50Joy shouted from the tree house.

#51The bucket was sitting on the ground with a rope tied to its handle.

#52The rope was attached to the pulley, which was attached to the roof.

#53Mom set the fol wers in the bucket.

#54Now watch this, called Joy.

#55She pulled on the rope, the pulley turned, and the bucket rose.

#56Joy lifted the daisies out of the bucket.

#57Come on up, Mom!

#58One by one everyone took a turn looking out on the Donovans' land from the tree house.

#59Everyone opened and shut the tree house door.

#60They looked out the window and tried out the pulley.

#61Let's give a big cheer for Dad and Joy!

#62shouted Katie.

#63Mom, Grandpa, and Katie clapped and cheered.

#64Dad bowed.

#65Joy beamed.

#66One more thing, said Katie.

#67Dad put up the new wind sock on the tree house roof.

#68Look!

#69You can see it hanging from the pole.

#70Everyone looked up at the wind sock.

#71Mom helped me make it.

#72Wow! said Joy.

#73A wind sock tells us the strength and direction of the wind, explained Katie.

#74When the wind is still, the wind sock just hangs.

#75Like it's doing right now, said Grandpa.

#76That's right, Katie said.

#77But when the wind is strong, the wind sock flies straight out!

#78Katie paused and opened her eyes extra wide.

#79And if that wind is coming from the southwest, look out!

#80It might be tornado time!

#81That's pretty cool, Katie, said Joy.
