#13Mr. Higgins nodded to Katie, and she walked to the whiteboard.

#14She took a marker and drew a big chicken.

#15Just as Katie fni ished the tail, Joy marched back into the room.

#16Grandpa walked behind her with a large cardboard box.

#17Let's all say hello to Mr. Donovan, instructed Mr. Higgins.

#18The third graders clapped and called, Hello, Mr. Donovan!

#19Hello, kids, Grandpa said, smiling.

#20He carried the box to a table in the front of the room.

#21Then he sat down on a small chair .

#22I've already seen the chicks, Luke whispered to the boy next to him.

#23They're cheeping!

#24cried Laura Layman.

#25Joy walked to the front of the class and stood beside Katie.

#26We're going to look at the chicks in the box.

#27But fri st Katie will tell you about her drawing.

#28In five or six months, these little chicks will look like this.

#29This is a grown-up hen.

#30That's what you call a female chicken, Katie explained to the class.

#31Here is the hen's beak.

#32She pointed to the whiteboard.

#33This wavy thing on top is called a comb.

#34She tapped her finger on the comb.

#35And this floppy part under the beak is called a wattle.

#36Cool, said Luke.

#37Where are the feet?

#38The whole class laughed.

#39Katie had run out of space on the board and hadn't drawn the feet.

#40You're silly, Luke, replied Katie.

#41Thank you, Katie, said Mr. Higgins.

#42That was very helpful.

#43Now it was Joy's turn.

#44Our chicks aren't grown up yet, she said.

#45They're about two weeks old.

#46She lifted the lid off the box.

#47All the third graders jumped out of their seats and gathered around the box.

#48Hey! exclaimed Luke.

#49Their hair looks funny.

#50It's sticking out.

#51The chicks were cheeping and hopping around inside the box.

#52Joy lifted a chick from the box.

#53They're getting real feathers on their tails and wings.

#54This one has little horns, exclaimed one of her classmates.

#55That is where its comb is starting to grow, explained Joy.

#56Why do some have white legs and some have yellow legs?

#57asked Luke.

#58They're just different, said Joy.

#59Are the two white ones twins?

#60asked Laura.

#61They look alike.

#62They look alike, but they're not the same, said Katie.

#63She picked up one of the white chicks and put it in Laura's hand.

#64This one is nice and calm, but the other one― The other white chick chirped and ran around in circles.

#65Everyone looked closely into the box as the chick tripped over the feeder.

#66It knocked into some of the other chicks.

#67What's it doing?

#68asked Luke.

#69Suddenly the squawking chick jumped and flapped its little wings.

#70It's trying to fly!

#71cried Laura.

#72All the children laughed.

#73See? said Joy.

#74The chicks look alike.

#75But they're really different.

#76Just like us!

#77Katie couldn't help saying.

#78Hooray for Katie and Joy's chicks!

#79Laura said.

#80All the third graders clapped and cheered.

#81Katie and Joy looked at each other and smiled.

#82Then they cheered too!
