#29Katie led the way down the hall, past the spare room.

#30Listen to those chicks, said Luke.

#31They are loud!

#33complained Katie.

#34Then she stopped, worried.

#35Wait a minute.

#36Is that door open?

#37She looked back toward the spare room.

#38It should be closed!

#39Katie and Luke hurried into the spare room.

#40Katie switched on the light.

#41JELLYBEAN! she cried.

#42The cat's head was in the box.

#43Everything happened so fast.

#44Jellybean leaped up and landed on the desk.

#45Luke tried to grab Jellybean, but the cat leaped to the floor.

#46Then Jellybean ran out the door and down the hall.

#47A white ball of fluff was in her mouth.

#48COME BACK HERE!

#49screamed Katie.

#50Mom!

#51Dad!

#52Help!

#53Katie and Luke chased Jellybean into Mom and Dad's bedroom.

#54Where is she?

#55cried Katie.

#56She dropped to the floor and looked under the bed.

#57Katie could see Jellybean's yellow eyes shining in the dark.

#58A white chick was in the cat's mouth.

#59The frightened chick cheeped loudly.

#60Katie pulled her head out from under the bed.

#61The whole family was looking down at her with wide eyes.

#62Jellybean has a chick, she said grimly.

#63Joy gasped.

#64Uh-oh, said Dad.

#65Not good, added Grandpa.

#66Don't worry, said Katie.

#67I think I can get it back.

#68Then she wiggled under the bed, trying not to panic.

#69Hello, Jellybean, she said softly, facing the cat.

#70What have you got?

#71Looking like a proud hunter, Jellybean held on to the chick.

#72Come on, Jellybean, Katie whispered.

#73Let me have the baby chick.

#74Katie slowly reached out.

#75She gently cupped her hands underneath the chick.

#76Jellybean opened her mouth, and the chick fell into Katie's hands.

#77Thank you, Jellybean, whispered Katie.

#78Then she wiggled out from under the bed.

#79Got it!

#80Katie said as she stood up.

#81Thank you, Katie!

#82exclaimed Joy.

#83Let's check on the others, said Mom.

#84Everyone rushed to the box.

#85One, two, three, four, five, counted Katie.

#86She put the white chick back with the others.

#87Six, she said.

#88Luke was standing in the doorway.

#89He looked unhappy.

#90This was my fault, he said.

#91I left the door open.

#92No, replied Katie.

#93It was my fault.

#94She looked at Joy.

#95I forgot to make sure the door was closed.

#96I'm sorry, Joy.

#97Joy gave Katie a hug.

#98We still have six chicks, she said.

#99So everything is okay.

#100Katie nodded.

#101That was close, she murmured.

#102Well, Grandpa spoke up, I still have two slices of pie downstairs.
