#52He knelt on the floor and put his arms and hands over his head.

#53Perfect! said Mr. Higgins.

#54The third graders cheered.

#55Carlos grinned and returned to his desk.

#56We're ready for the drill!

#58Now get out your math homework.

#59Everybody groaned.

#60After math came social studies and then lunch.

#61When the children returned from the lunchroom, it was time for art.

#62Let's work on our tornado posters, announced Mr. Higgins.

#63Katie, please pass out the magic markers.

#64Katie grabbed the coffee can filled with markers when suddenly—weeee-uuuuu, weeee-uuuuu, weeee-uuuuu.

#65Katie jumped and the markers flew into the air.

#66Tornado drill!

#67shouted Luke.

#68The speaker on the wall crackled and hissed.

#69Then Ms. Olson's voice filled the room.

#70Students! the principal reminded them.

#71Go immediately to the basement.

#72Everyone moved toward the door except Katie.

#73She was picking up markers.

#74Get in line, Katie, Joy said.

#75I am, Katie snapped back.

#76She hated it when Joy told her what to do.

#77The third graders followed Mr. Higgins.

#78They went down the stairs to the basement.

#79Other students entered the basement from all directions.

#80Everybody down!

#81Mr. Higgins called as soon as everyone was standing by the wall.

#82All the children dropped to the floor in the take-cover position.

#83Ms. Olson held up her stopwatch and gave it a click.

#84Two minutes exactly, she said.

#85Good work, everyone!

#86Back in the classroom, Mr. Higgins passed out a paper to each student.

#88This is a list of things you can do at home to get ready for tornado season, he said.

#95She scribbled something on a piece of notebook paper and then passed it to Joy.
