#9Flashlight?
#10Yep, replied Katie.
#11I'm ready to hunt worms.
#12Don't go too far from the house, said Mom.
#13And don't be gone long!
#14Katie and Luke stepped off the porch and headed into the darkness.
#15The grass is all wet, said Katie.
#16That's good, explained Luke.
#17Earthworms like it cool and wet.
#18My toes don't, replied Katie.
#19Her sneakers felt soggy.
#20Walk softly, warned Luke.
#21If they feel our footsteps, they will slip right back into the ground.
#22I thought we had to dig for worms, said Katie.
#23That's the hard way, replied Luke.
#24This is the easy way.
#25They stepped carefully through the grass.
#26There was no sound except the croaking of the toads down by the creek.
#27Okay, stop here, instructed Luke.
#28Turn on your flashlight.
#29Katie flashed the red beam back and forth over the grass.
#30See, he whispered.
#31The worms are out!
#32Luke was right!
#33Everywhere the light shone, Katie could see worms gleaming in the grass.
#34Ooh, creepy, she whispered.
#35Luke gave her a look.
#36Sorry, said Katie.
#37I mean, ooh, cool!
#38Now watch me, ordered Luke.
#39He bent over one of the shining worms and grabbed it.
#40Then he slowly pulled the worm out of its hole.
#41Got it, said Luke.
#42It's a big one.
#43He plopped it into his bucket.
#44Now you try.
#45Katie stooped down beside Luke and quickly spotted an earthworm.
#46She reached out and grabbed.
#47Got it!
#48she said.
#49She held her hand up to show Luke.
#50But her hand was empty.
#51It got away!
#52she cried.
#53And my hand is all slimy!
#54That's what your rag is for, explained Luke.
#55Dry your hand and try again.
#56This time, grab it closer to the middle.
#57As Katie wiped her hand on her rag, she spotted another worm.
#58She slowly stretched out her hand and grabbed it around its middle.
#59She pulled.
#60It won't come out.
#61It's holding on, she said.
#62Keep pulling, instructed Luke.
#63The worm will get tired and let go.
#64Katie pulled some more until the earthworm came sliding out.
#65Hooray! she exclaimed.
#66I got one!
#67Okay, said Luke.
#68Toss it in the bucket.
#69A little later, Katie and Luke ran through the back door, into the kitchen.
#70Everyone was sitting around the table, and Grandpa was serving slices of apple pie.
#71I've got worms!
#72shouted Katie.
#73Not in the house, said Mom.
#74Oh, right, said Katie.
#75She opened the back door and set her bucket on the porch.
#76Now, before you have your pie, said Mom, why don't you show Luke our new chicks?
#77Katie sighed.
#78She wanted to talk about her worms.
#79Come on, Luke, she said softly.
#80Katie led her cousin out of the kitchen and up the stairs.
#81She opened the door to the spare room and pulled him over to the chick box.
#82There they are, she said.
#83They're cute, but a lot of trouble.
#84You have to feed them and clean up their stinky poop.
#85Worms are more fun, stated Luke.
#86That's for sure, agreed Katie.
#87Now, let's go eat some pie.
#88The two worm hunters didn't notice another hunter in the hallway.
#89Jellybean had been waiting silently in the dark.
#90She crept toward the spare room.
#91The door had been left open just a crack.
#92Jellybean put one paw on the door and pushed.
#93The chicks chirped inside their box as the door swung open.
