#22The chicks were chirping in their box.

#26They want to come out and meet you, replied Grandpa.

#27Here are the scissors.

#28Joy cut the bands around the box and lifted the lid.

#29Ooh! squealed Joy when she saw the little balls of fluff inside.

#30Aren't they sweet?

#31said Mom.

#32Look, Katie.

#33Katie had been standing back in the doorway.

#34But now she stepped forward and peeked in the box.

#35One, two, three, four, five, six, counted Katie.

#36All there.

#37Let's put them in the box before they get cold, suggested Grandpa.

#38One by one, Joy placed the chicks in the box.

#39Mom had her chicken book open.

#40Now, it's important that they eat and drink, she stated.

#41Have they found the water, Joy?

#42Joy picked up a chick and put it next to the water feeder.

#43Look! she exclaimed and clapped her hands.

#44It's drinking!

#45Just then Dad stepped into the spare room.

#46As usual his work clothes were dirty.

#47Katie gave him a big hug anyway.

#48Everyone's looking at the chicks, Dad, she said.

#49But I have work to do in my room.

#50Well, look at these babies!

#51exclaimed Dad with a grin as he looked into the box.

#52The chicks had been drinking water and pecking at their food.

#53But now they were getting quiet.

#54One little chick tipped over on its side and lay completely still.

#55What's wrong?

#56asked Joy, worried.

#57She poked the chick lightly with her finger.

#58Its eyes popped open.

#59The little one just fell asleep, whispered Grandpa.

#60She's tired.

#61They watched the chicks fall asleep, one by one.

#62Joy put her finger to her lips.

#63Shh, she said.

#64Everyone tiptoed out of the spare room.

#65Joy pointed to a sign she had made for the door: NO CATS ALLOWED!

#66Down the hall Katie was hard at work.

#67She was taping a piece of red plastic over a flashlight.

#68Luke had told her how to do it.

#69Jellybean was sprawled on Katie's bed watching every move Katie made.

#70Jellybean, said Katie, did you know that earthworms in Australia can grow to be three and a half meters long?

#71Jellybean blinked while Katie tore off another piece of tape.

#72And did you know that some earthworms live to be eight years old?

#73Jellybean blinked again.

#74HA!

#75That's how old I am, exclaimed Katie as she smoothed the tape into place.

#77She closed the curtains and turned off the light switch.

#78Then Katie turned on the flashlight.

#79A spooky red beam flashed around the room.

#80Great! she said.

#81I'm ready for worm hunting!
