#1Mowgli explained his plan to Akala.

#2Then, Akala and Gray Brother got to work.

#3The two wolves ran in and out of the herd of buffalo.

#4They separated the herd into two groups.

#5The females and young buffalo were in one group.

#6They glared and pawed, ready to attack the wolves.

#7The male buffalo stood together in the other group.

#8They were bigger and looked more threatening.

#9But Mowgli knew they were less dangerous than the females.

#10The males had no young calves to protect.

#11Mowgli slipped onto Rama's back.

#12Akala, drive your herd left toward the head of this big ravine.

#13Gray Brother, drive the females to the ravine's other end.

#14Keep them there till we come down.

#15Akala howled and his group took off.

#16Gray Brother began to lead the females in the opposite direction.

#17Meanwhile, some of the village children were watching the scene.

#18They hurried home with the cattle as fast as their legs could carry them.

#19The buffalo have gone mad! They're running away!

#20Mowgli's plan was simple.

#21He planned to trap Sheer Khan in the ravine, between the two herds.

#22Sheer Khan had just eaten a large meal.

#23It would be hard for him to fight or climb up the sides of the ravine.

#24Mowgli rounded up the confused males at the head of the ravine.

#25They stood on a grassy slope that led down to the ravine.

#26Good! Mowgli thought, looking at the sides of the ravine.

#27The sides ran nearly straight up and down.

#28Thick vines hung over them.

#29That would make it even harder for the tiger to climb out.

#30Mowgli held up a hand to signal Akala.

#31Then he put his hands to his mouth and shouted down the ravine.

#32Sheer Khan!

#33Echoes jumped from rock to rock.

#34A snarl echoed back.

#35Who calls me?

#36It's me! Mowgli!

#37He turned to Akala.

#38Bring the herd down now! Down Rama, down!

#39He commanded the buffalo.

#40The male herd stood at the edge of the slope.

#41Akala gave a hunting yell and they fell forward.

#42They fell one after the other.

#43Like boulders crashing down during a flood.

#44In the ravine, Rama quickly caught Sheer Khan's scent.

#45Now the buffalo knew what their job was.

#46It was a charge against a tiger.

#47Sheer Khan first heard a thunder of hoes.

#48He picked himself up and looked from side to side,

#49trying to find a way out of the ravine.

#50But its walls were straight and full of twisting vines.

#51And he was still sleepy and heavy from his large meal.

#52The stampede splashed through a pool of water.

#53The animals bellowed loudly.

#54Mowgli heard a reply from the females at the other end of the ravine.

#55Sheer Khan turned to look toward the females.

#56Then the tiger whirled back toward the males.

#57The tiger knew by instinct that it was better to face them

#58than any protective mothers.

#59Just then Rama tripped and stumbled.

#60The beasts behind him crashed hard into the approaching females.

#61Soon, both herds were charging through the ravine,

#62stamping and snorting as they ran.

#63Mowgli slipped off Rama's neck.

#64Quick Akala, break them up before they start fighting one another.

#65Akala and Grey Brother ran around the buffalo, trying to separate them.

#66Suddenly, the herd turned toward Mowgli.

#67They were ready to charge through the ravine again.

#68But Mowgli held up his hand.

#69Sheer Khan was already dead.

#70Soon, hungry birds would be coming for him.
