#13Every day, Mowgli herded the buffalo. Day after day, he saw Gray brother sitting on the rock across the plain.

#14Most days, Mowgli just lay on the grass, listening carefully to the sounds as Father Wolf had taught him.

#15If Sheer Khan approached, Mowgli would surely hear him in the stillness.

#16One day, Mowgli glanced at the rock. It was empty.

#17Quickly, he herded the buffalo to the tree with the golden red flowers.

#18There sat Gray brother. Every hair on his back was standing up.

#19Sheer Khan has been hiding for a month, Gray brother said.

#20But last night, he crossed the plains with Tabaki.

#21Mowgli frowned.

#22Tabaki? Mowgli was not afraid of Sheer Khan. However, Tabaki was another story.

#23The jackal was very cunning.

#24Have no fear. I met Tabaki at dawn and took care of him.

#25Gray brother licked his lips.

#26First, he gave me some important information. Sheer Khan plans to wait for you at the village gate tonight.

#27Where's Sheer Khan now? Mowgli asked.

#28He's in the big dry ravine, the one along the river.

#29Has he hunted yet today? Mowgli asked. The answer could mean his own life or death.

#30He ate a large meal at dawn. Gray brother replied.

#31Good. Mowgli was thinking aloud.

#32That means he'll be too full to move fast. If there were more of us, we could attack him.

#33But these buffalo will not charge unless they smell him.

#34And I cannot speak their language yet to explain things to them.

#35Do you think we can pick up the tiger's scent? That way the buffalo can smell it.

#36Gray brother shook his head.

#37Sheer Khan traveled in the river. This leaves no scent.

#38Tabaki must have told him to do that. Sheer Khan would not have thought of it alone.

#39Mowgli stood with his finger in his mouth.

#40I can take the buffalo through the jungle to the head of the ravine.

#41We can block that end, but Sheer Khan will escape the other way.

#42We must block the other end too.

#43Mowgli looked at the wolf.

#44Can you take half of the animals and do that?

#45Not by myself, but I have brought a wise helper.

#46Gray brother ran off and dropped into a hole.

#47Seconds later, the gray head popped up.

#48The hot air filled with a familiar hunting howl.

#49Mowgli clapped his hands in delight.

#50Akala!
