#25The deer looks upset.

#26Reluctantly, Dad parked on the side of the road and turned on the car's hazard lights.

#27The two of them got out and slowly approached the deer.

#28It appeared afraid, but it didn't run away.

#29Look! yelled Ethan, pointing to a ditch below.

#30A young fawn was standing in a rushing stream.

#31The deer's fawn is stuck down there.

#32We have to save it!

#33Dad shook his head.

#34There's nothing we can do.

#35This slope is too steep for us.

#36Ethan spotted the forest ranger's number on a nearby sign.

#37He called the number and explained the situation.

#38Soon Tucker, the forest ranger, arrived.

#39He looked down into the ditch and frowned.

#40I can't get down there by myself, he said.

#41Ethan nervously watched the stream's current.

#42It was moving faster and nearly knocked the fawn over.

#43Maybe we can think of another solution, Ethan blurted out.

#44What if we formed a human chain?

#45We could pull the fawn up.

#46That might work, said Tucker.

#47But we're going to need more adults.

#48I'll get help from passing cars!

#49said Dad.

#50After Dad got five people to help, Tucker decided to begin the rescue.

#51I'll take the lead, said Tucker.

#52Everyone joined hands.

#53Ethan stood with his Dad at the end of the chain.

#54Dad gripped the man ahead of him with one hand while his other hand gripped the roadside barrier.

#55The human chain carefully descended.

#56At the bottom of the ditch, Tucker broke of f from the group and went toward the fawn.

#57He gently scooped it up and carried it back to the chain.

#58One man grabbed onto Tucker's waist, and they all began to pull upward.

#59Ethan let out a sigh of relief.

#60Finally the people—and the fawn—were back at the top.

#61The fawn squirmed out of Tucker's arms and dashed toward its mother.

#62Then the deer disappeared into the woods.

#63Nice job, Ethan, said Dad.

#64I told you to leave nature alone.

#65But I guess nature needs help from humans sometimes.

#66The ranger nodded.

#67The human chain was a smart idea.

#68You're obviously a nature lover.

#70Ethan grinned, and Dad burst out laughing.
