#19A motherboard is like the computer's nervous system.

#20Other parts plug into it, and the motherboard lets the parts communicate.

#21The motherboard makes sure the information in the computer gets to where it needs to go.

#22Your mother makes sure everyone in our family gets to where they need to go, said Dad.

#23Mom laughed.

#24I picked up a small square package.

#25This is the central processing unit, or CPU.

#26The CPU does all of the computer's work.

#27It's like the computer's brain.

#28That's a pretty thin brain!

#29said Dad.

#30How can it remember anything?

#31The CPU isn't exactly like a person's brain, I explained.

#32It does the thinking for the computer, but it doesn't actually store information.

#33There are two other pieces of hardware for that.

#34I pointed to a metal box.

#35The hard drive is where the computer stores all of its information.

#36When you save something, it's stored on the hard drive.

#37Then I held up a rectangular piece.

#38This is RAM.

#39That stands for random access memory.

#40RAM is where the computer puts information while it's working on it.

#41I'm putting in extra RAM so I can work on several things at the same time.

#42I could use extra memory!

#43Dad laughed.

#44I attached the RAM and CPU to the motherboard.

#45Then I carefully placed the motherboard in the case.

#46Is the computer ready?

#47asked Mom.

#48Not yet.

#49I pointed out spots on the motherboard.

#50These places are where you add parts for sound and graphics.

#51I got a good graphics card for playing games.

#52I put the remaining parts into place and connected my monitor to the computer.

#53Let's plug it in now, I said, crossing my fingers for luck.

#54Dad plugged the computer into a power strip, and I switched it on.

#55We heard the computer start up, and then numbers scrolled up the screen.

#56Mom and Dad cheered and I let out a sigh of relief.

#57Can you surf the internet now?

#58Mom asked.

#59Not yet.

#60This is just the hardware, I said.

#61I still have to install software—the programs and code that tell the computer what to do.

#62Can you write code too?

#63asked Dad teasingly.

#64I smiled.

#65That's my next project.
