#31Dad says when the cart's full, we can go to the nut-buying station.

#35She picked up two walnuts at once.

#36For several minutes, the only sound was the thud, thud, thud of walnuts dropping into buckets.

#41They emptied their buckets into the cart and started grabbing more walnuts.

#42Thud, thud, thud.

#43Done! cried Olivia.

#44It's a tie!

#45The girls laughed.

#46They were working, but it was fun!

#47As the morning sun rose higher, Joy moved closer to the woods.

#48Olivia worked her way toward the pond, fliling bucket after bucket.

#49The grass is kind of tall there, Joy called.

#50It's a good spot, said Olivia.

#51Lots of walnuts have rolled down here.

#52Just watch out, said Joy.

#53Watch out for what?

#54said Olivia.

#55Oh, poison ivy and stuff.

#56Ticks.

#57You know.

#58Whatever.

#59Olivia was picking up walnuts as fast as she could.

#60She filled her bucket quickly.

#61I'm going to set a new world record!

#62she said with a laugh.

#63Then she screamed.

#64A snake!

#65she yelled.

#66She tried to stand up, but she slipped back down into the grass.

#67She screamed again.

#68It's just a black snake, called Joy.

#69There it goes.

#71You scared it.

#72I scared the snake?

#73cried Olivia.

#74She ran toward Joy.

#75Just then a strong breeze blew through the trees.

#76A walnut fell on Olivia's toe.

#77Ouch! she cried and looked up into the tree.

#80That really hurt!

#81She rubbed her nose and screamed again.

#82My nose is bleeding!

#83Soon Olivia was sitting beside Katie on the front porch.

#84Keep holding your nose for ten minutes, said Grandpa.

#85And no more walnut collecting today, Mom said.

#86You shouldn't bend over for several hours.

#87Another damaged walnut picker, said Katie.

#88Joy was heading back out for more walnuts when Dad's truck drove up the driveway.

#89Joy stopped and talked with him for a moment, and then continued toward the pond.

#90Dad joined the rest of the family on the porch.

#91Bad news for Joy, he said.

#92This morning the nut company lowered the price again—to ten cents.

#93Oh, poor Joy!

#94said Mom.

#95Grandpa shook his head.

#96She's running out of time, he said.

#97Do you think she can still reach her goal?

#98I don't know, said Dad.

#99Now she needs more than five hundred pounds.

#100Now she needs a lot more helpers, said Katie.

#101Olivia pulled her cell phone out of her pocket.

#102Now we need to make some phone calls!
