#14Instead of gleaming, white sand, the sea floor here was dark and slimy.

#15Mud seeped from every hole and every crack.

#16Where are the sea flowers?

#17wondered the Little Mermaid.

#18Where is the seaweed?

#19Get out of Gooba, Princess, hissed a snake from the mouth of a cave.

#20Who's that?

#21asked the frightened mermaid.

#22The snake vanished into the darkness of the cave.

#23All of a sudden, the Little Mermaid saw twirling cones of water, twisting this way and that.

#24The cones were swallowing up everything within reach.

#25Anything that became caught in the churning water was sucked down into the mud.

#26I am not afraid, she said to herself.

#27My strong tail can take me around the danger easily.

#28And she swam around each cone of whirling water in her path.

#29Next she came to a muddy forest of thin trees with bony branches.

#30Each long branch had twigs that moved like fingers, grabbing anything nearby.

#31The trees' sticky fingers held fish bones and pieces of wood from sunken ships.

#32The skeletons of drowned sailors hung from the tree branches.

#33Oh dear, thought the Little Mermaid, the trees never let go of their victims!

#34Terrifei d, she stopped.

#35I don't think I can do this!

#36she cried.

#37Her little heart thumped with fear and she almost turned back.

#38But then she remembered her Prince.

#39For the sake of my love, she thought, I must go on.

#40Before she entered the forest, the mermaid braided her flowing hair close to her head.

#41Then she darted through the water like a nimble fish.

#42The slimy branches stretched out their fni gers to seize her.

#43But she was too fast.

#44They could not catch her.

#45Finally she reached a clearing in the sea forest.

#46Fat worms stood guard and long snakes slithered about.

#47The Little Mermaid saw a shack built of bones.

#48The Sea Witch was sitting in front, picking her teeth with a seashell.

#49With her tangled hair and beady eyes, she looked horrifying.

#50At her feet sat a dozen pet frogs, croaking at her.

#51Welcome, Little Mermaid.

#52I was expecting you, said the Sea Witch.

#53And I know why you are here.

#54You want to be a human.

#55What a very foolish idea!

#56Then the Sea Witch began to laugh.
