#27Bagheera exclaimed as the marble shattered in a cloud of dust.

#28Mowgli leaped out and threw himself at Baloo and Bagheera.

#29Are you okay?

#30Baloo asked.

#31I'm sore and hungry.

#32Mowgli replied.

#33But I'm fine.

#34Ka stared at Mowgli.

#35So you're the man cub.

#36Why, you look like a monkey.

#37Mowgli bowed.

#38Thank you for saving my life and my friend's lives.

#40Ka said softly.

#41By now, the moon had sunk behind the hills.

#42Trembling monkeys huddled together on the wall and along the stone buildings.

#43Ka glided into the center of the terrace and closed his jaws with a snap.

#44Terrified, the monkeys watched him begin a slow dance.

#45This is my dance called the hunger of Ka.

#46Sit still and watch me.

#47The snake commanded.

#48Ka wove his head from right to left.

#49He made slow loops with his body.

#50His scales rustled.

#51Mowgli stood with Baloo and Bagheera.

#52His eyes flicked from the monkeys to his friends.

#53Everyone was watching the snake with wonder.

#54Ka hissed.

#55Come closer, monkeys.

#56The monkeys swayed forward helplessly.

#57Baloo and Bagheera began to pitch forward too.

#58Mowgli sprang toward them.

#59Come on!

#60He cried, yanking them away.

#61Let's get out of here!

#62The two great beasts jumped as if Mowgli had just woken them from a dream.

#63Then they ran a short distance away.

#64Bagheera glanced back at the snake and shuddered.

#65The monkeys aren't the only ones who are scared of Ka.

#66That snake makes me nervous.

#67Baloo shook out his fur.

#68It worked out fine. We have Mowgli again.

#69True, but this little adventure cost us.

#70Bagheera said sternly,

#71We're both injured, which means we cannot hunt for several days.

#72And we were forced to ask Ka for protection.

#73He glared at Mowgli.

#74We warned you about this.

#75We told you it was foolish to play with the monkeys.

#77I'm sorry.

#78He's very young, Baloo said.

#79And he's sorry for what he's done.

#80Being sorry is not enough punishment for breaking the rules.

#81Bagheera replied.

#82With that, he gave Mowgli some light taps on the shoulder.

#84Bagheera said.
