#19With a furious roar, the panther rushed forward.

#20He darted right and left, striking monkeys.

#21The startled creatures howled with fright and rage.

#22Finally, a monkey managed to kick Bagheera.

#23There's only one attacker!

#24She shouted,

#25Let's get him!

#26A mass of monkeys surrounded Bagheera.

#27They were biting, scratching, tearing and pulling.

#28Meanwhile, another group had grabbed Mowgli.

#29They dragged him up the wall of a temple.

#30Then they pushed him through a hole in its broken dome.

#31A boy raised by humans would have gotten hurt in the fall to the temple floor.

#32But Mowgli fell exactly as Baloo had taught him.

#33He landed on his feet.

#34Stay in there!

#35A monkey said.

#36We'll be back after we get rid of your friends.

#37Now Mowgli could hear Ka.

#38He quickly gave the snakes call.

#39There were other snakes inside the ruins.

#40They hissed back at him.

#41Stand still, little brother!

#42Please, don't step on us!

#43Mowgli stood as quietly as he could, peering through a hole.

#44Listen to the furious sound of Bagheera fighting.

#45Baloo must be here too.

#46Mowgli thought.

#47Bagheera would not have come without him.

#48But right now, Bagheera could use some help from me.

#49Go to the water tank, Bagheera!

#50He shouted.

#51Get to the water!

#52Bagheera heard Mowgli's cry.

#53Thank goodness!

#54The panther thought, fighting his way toward the tanks.

#55The man-cup is safe!

#56Suddenly a shout rose.

#57It was Baloo.

#58Bagheera!

#59I'm here!

#60The old bear panted as he climbed the terrace.

#61He threw himself onto his rear legs and held out his paws.

#62Then he began to hit away monkeys.

#63Bat, bat, bat!

#64Mowgli heard a crash, followed by a splash.

#65Bagheera had made it to the water tank.

#66The monkeys would not follow him in there.

#67The panther gasped for breath, his head just out of the water.

#68Monkeys stood on the steps, dancing up and down with rage.

#69They were ready to spring on him when he came out to help Baloo.

#70Where's Ka?

#71Bagheera thought, had the snake left?

#72He lifted his dripping chin and gave the snakes call.

#73It had taken Ka a long time to get over the west wall.

#74He coiled and uncoiled himself to be sure that every bit of his long body was working.

#75Meanwhile, Baloo fought some monkeys.

#76Among the bat flew back and forth over them all, carrying the news of the battle.

#77Then, Hathi the elephant trumpeted loudly, waking up birds and more monkeys.

#78Jungle animals began racing toward Monkey City.

#79All at once, Ka came, ready to deliver a crushing blow.

#80The python's first strike drove into the heart of the crowd around Baloo.

#81He didn't need to strike again.

#82For all at once, the monkeys scattered.

#83It's Ka!

#84They cried, Run!
