#23Let's do something with the ring, said Kathleen We can't, said Gerald.

#24Mademoiselle said she's coming to meet us.

#25But the caretaker said he'd make a picnic for us after everyone left, said Mabel.

#26We're supposed to meet him at five o'clock.

#27Then you go meet him, and I'll wait for Mademoiselle, said Gerald.

#28I don't want you to miss the picnic.

#29So at five o'clock, Mabel, Kathleen, and Jimmy went to meet the caretaker.

#30It was a very hot day, and they were grumpy.

#31They soon saw the caretaker near the edge of some woods.

#32Two picnic baskets lay on the ground.

#33I'm making tea, he said.

#34There's a little canal just over the ridge.

#35You can go wading until the tea is ready.

#36The water was delightfully cool.

#37Soon the children were in better spirits.

#38And they were even happier when they had their tea.

#39Such a feast of cakes and fruit!

#40This is like the feast of the gods, said Jimmy.

#41What are you talking about? asked the caretaker.

#42Jimmy told him how they had turned into statues and eaten with the gods on the island.

#43What big imaginations you all have! said the caretaker.

#44But everything I told you is true, Jimmy insisted.

#45And Mabel told you the truth about the ring too.

#46Kathleen, give me the ring.

#47Kathleen reluctantly handed him the ring.

#48This is the ring Mabel told you about, said Jimmy.

#49I say it's a wishing ring.

#50If you wear it and make a wish, your wish will come true.

#51He gave the ring to the caretaker.

#52Don't wish for anything silly, said Kathleen.

#53I'll wish for the only thing I really want, said the caretaker.

#54He closed his eyes.

#55I wish that my friend was here.

#56The three children expected to see a man appear.

#57But they only saw Gerald and Mademoiselle coming toward them.

#58Hello, said Gerald.

#59I persuaded Mademoiselle . . .

#60He stopped talking because Mademoiselle and the caretaker were staring at each other.

#61It's you! said the caretaker.

#62And you! said Mademoiselle in an odd, choked voice.

#63Is she your friend? asked Jimmy.

#64Yes, said the caretaker.

#65Jimmy, give your brother some tea.

#66Mademoiselle, please come walk with me.

#68We'll be back in an hour, said Mademoiselle, who suddenly looked younger and more beautiful.
