#27But they set off to explore the island anyway.

#29The brambles scratched Mabel's bare feet and legs.

#30She had left her shoes and stockings on the mainland.

#31Come on, everybody, cheer up, said Gerald.

#32We'll get out of here.

#33Suddenly he stumbled and disappeared with a yell.

#34Mabel nearly fell too.

#35Right in front of her was a flight of moss-covered steps.

#36Gerald, are you hurt? she called down the steps.

#37A little, he said.

#38But I found a passage.

#39There's always a passage in this place, said Jimmy.

#40I forgot about that passage! declared Mabel.

#41It goes under the water and comes out at the Temple of Flora!

#42Maybe it even goes past the place where the Ugly-Wugly found his good hotel.

#43I'm not going down there in the dark, said Kathleen.

#44Gerald came back up the steps.

#45Maybe there's a secret spring.

#46Then Gerald led the way down the steps.

#47He held Kathleen's hand so she wouldn't feel afraid.

#48The steps led to a passage, which took a turn.

#49Then there were more steps.

#50These led to a straight, clean, marble passage.

#51Suddenly the children found themselves in a great hall.

#52The room was filled with light.

#53And each one of them noticed something different in the arches around the room.

#54There was a ship at sea.

#55A king on his throne.

#56The Ugly-Wugly sitting happily in front of a good hotel.

#57Oh, I'm glad we came! said Kathleen.

#58They walked slowly through the hall.

#59At the end of the hall, they saw the source of the light: the statue of Psyche.

#60On its hand was the ring.

#61I hope you don't mind, Gerald said to the statue.

#62He removed the ring very gently.

#63They passed Psyche and entered a dark, twisting passage.

#64Give me the ring, Gerald, said Kathleen.

#65I know what to say.

#66Gerald handed it to her reluctantly.

#67I wish, she said slowly, that no one at home will know we've been out tonight.

#68I wish we were safe in our own beds and asleep.

#69And that is exactly what happened next.
