#45They went right and came to another fork and then another.

#46We're completely lost, said Kathleen.

#48Now the trees arched overhead and bushes lined the banks along the road.

#49Let's have some lunch, said Jimmy.

#50As they sat down, Gerald leaned against some bushes.

#51Oh my! he cried.

#52The bushes gave way and he almost fell backward.

#53The other two pulled back the bushes.

#54There was a large hole in the bank.

#55It's a cave! said Gerald.

#56I'm going in.

#57Oh, don't! said Kathleen.

#58There might be snakes.

#59But Gerald was already crawling through the hole.

#60It is a cave!

#61Come look!

#62Kathleen and Jimmy followed him down the hole.

#63They walked a short distance and came out into the sunshine.

#64How wonderful! said Kathleen.

#65Ahead of them was a tall arch framed with ferns and grasses.

#66It looks like a train tunnel, said Jimmy.

#67It's the entrance to the enchanted castle, said Kathleen.

#68Oh, don't be silly.

#69Gerald led the way to the arch.

#70There's a set of steps! said Jimmy.

#71They followed Gerald down the steps, walking slowly through the darkness.

#72Up ahead was a patch of daylight.

#73The children passed under another arch and out onto a terrace.

#74Below them was a lake with an island.

#75Beyond that, marble statues gleamed among the trees.

#76White towers stood out against the sky.

#77It's the enchanted castle! cried Kathleen.
