#1Millions of people visit the Louvre Museum in Paris each year.
#2Many want a glimpse of one painting in particular—the Mona Lisa.
#3The Louvre is its home now, but the painting has moved around a lot.
#4Leonardo da Vinci began working on the portrait in Italy.
#5In 1516 the French king invited da Vinci to France.
#6Da Vinci accepted, and he brought the painting with him when he moved.
#7Before da Vinci died, the French king bought the painting.
#8That year the Louvre Palace became a public museum.
#9The Mona Lisa was put on display in the museum.
#10But it did not stay there for long.
#11Within a decade, Napoleon took over France, and the Mona Lisa moved again.
#12Napoleon hung the painting in his own bedroom!
#13Soon it ended up back on display in the Louvre.
#14The Mona Lisa was not a very popular painting though.
#15This all changed in August On a Tuesday morning, a visitor to the museum noticed the painting was gone.
#16At first the museum staff didn't worry.
#17Paintings were often removed to be cleaned or photographed.
#18But soon the staff realized something was terribly wrong.
#19The painting had been stolen!
#20It turned out that an Italian man named Vincenzo Peruggia had taken it.
#21He believed that the Italian masterpiece belonged in Italy, not France.
#22So Peruggia, a handyman for the museum, came up with a plan.
#23He knew the museum was always closed on Mondays.
#24One Sunday, after the museum closed for the day, he hid in a closet.
#25The next morning, he removed the frame from the painting.
#26He hid the Mona Lisa under his jacket.
#27Then he walked right out of the museum!
#28The bold theft made headlines around the world.
#29Instantly the Mona Lisa became the world's most famous painting.
#30For two years Peruggia kept the painting hidden in a trunk.
#31Eventually he returned to Italy.
#32He tried to sell the painting there and was caught.
#33The painting returned to the Louvre more famous than ever.
#34It has moved around several more times since then.
#35During World War II, it was hidden for protection.
#36Later it traveled to other famous museums around the world.
#37But mostly the painting has stayed in the Louvre.
#38The Mona Lisa gets lots of attention.
#39But not all of that attention is good.
#40Over the years several people have tried to damage the painting.
#41So guards stand nearby, and a wooden rail keeps crowds a safe distance away.
#42The painting also has a glass case that protects and preserves it.
#43The Mona Lisa might be on the move again in the future.
#44But the Louvre is its permanent home.
#45If you ever want to see it, you know exactly where to go!
