#1Before 1980, Mount St. Helens, in Washington, was just another volcano in the Ring of Fire.
#2That's the huge circle of volcanoes that ring the Pacific Ocean.
#3The volcano had not erupted in over a hundred years.
#4It was green and rich with wildlife.
#5Spirit Lake, below the mountain, was full of fsi h and plants.
#6But then this volcano woke up!
#7Hot melted rock, called magma, had created lots of gas deep underground.
#8This gas had built up, causing pressure within the volcano.
#9On May 18, 1980, an earthquake struck the area—and Mount St. Helens finally erupted.
#10When the volcano exploded, its entire north side collapsed.
#11This created the biggest landslide in modern history.
#12Lava, which is magma that has reached the surface, blasted out of the mountain.
#13The lava mixed with rock, ash, and melted snow.
#14It flowed over the landscape.
#15Clouds of hot gases and rocks burst out too.
#16They knocked down entire forests.
#17The violent eruption left a huge crater at the top of the mountain—nearly three kilometers wide.
#18Mount St. Helens was now four hundred meters shorter than before the eruption!
#19This wasn't the most serious damage.
#20Fifty-seven people died in the eruption.
#21Roads, bridges, and hundreds of homes were destroyed.
#22Right after the eruption, scientists began to study the scene.
#23Ash and volcanic rock covered most of the landscape.
#24Spirit Lake was filled with ash and rock too.
#25Broken trees covered the surface of the lake.
#26There was nothing alive in sight.
#27The entire area looked as lifeless as the moon!
#28Scientists believed decades would pass before animals and plants returned to the area.
#29Yet only three months later, scientists spotted something incredible.
#30A gopher was digging out of its tunnel!
#31The animal had stayed safe underground during the dangerous eruption.
#32By the next spring, a plant was growing!
#33After ten years, plants had grown back and animals had returned.
#34Plankton and plants filled Spirit Lake again.
#35Life had returned to the mountain.
#36Meanwhile the volcano hadn't exactly fallen back to sleep.
#37After the eruption, lava continued to build up at the crater's floor.
#38It rose and rose.
#39By 1986 the lava had formed a dome 270 meters high.
#40Then the mountain grew mostly quiet again.
#41Once in a while, the mountain rumbled.
#42There were even small explosions.
#43But none of this activity was very serious.
#44In 2004 ash and steam clouds rose once more from the crater.
#45Rocks as big as buildings pushed up from the crater floor.
#46What was happening now?
#47No one knew.
#48But by 2007 the mountain went back to sleep.
#49Scientists think that the volcano may have run out of gas.
#50Today earthquakes and rumblings continue to occur near Mount St. Helens.
#51The good news is that scientists have learned a lot since the 1980 eruption.
#52These lessons will help them to make better predictions about future eruptions.
#53No one knows exactly when Mount St. Helens will wake up again.
#54But when it does, people are more likely to be prepared.
