#1Every day people around the world use one-dollar bills.
#2The U.
#3S. government prints billions of them every year!
#4People sometimes call these bills paper money.
#5But bills are not really made of paper.
#6They are printed on special cloth.
#7Seventy-five percent of the cloth is cotton— just like the cotton in your favorite jeans!
#8The rest of the cloth is linen.
#9This cloth is much stronger than paper.
#10Oh, and the bills' ink is special too.
#11It doesn't wash off!
#12The front of the bill has black ink.
#13But the back of the bill is printed in green.
#14Green fades less quickly than other colors.
#15This green ink gives all U.
#16S. dollars a nickname—greenbacks!
#17Dollar bills are very sturdy.
#18But they get passed from hand to hand.
#19They're folded in wallets and shoved into pockets.
#20They get torn and wet.
#21Over time they wear out.
#22An average dollar bill lasts less than six years.
#23So the U.
#24S. government has to replace worn-out bills.
#25They print new bills to replace the old ones.
#26The new bills go to banks for people to use.
#27Banks collect the old bills and send them back to the government.
#28Workers shred the old bills to destroy them.
#29Yep, that's right.
#30Money gets destroyed!
#31In fact, the United States shreds about ten billion dollars a year.
#32That's enough waste to fill 750 dump trucks!
#33In the past this waste got dumped in a landfill.
#34But today getting rid of greenbacks is a much greener process.
#35The government recycles a lot of old paper money.
#36Some shredded money goes into roofing material.
#37Some goes into home insulation.
#38Other bills become fuel for power plants to make electricity for homes.
#39Oh, and some paper money becomes filling for mattresses.
#40So you could even be sleeping on money!
#41Other bills are sent to farms that use them for compost.
#42I bet the soil is very rich in those gardens!
#43I usually spend my dollar bills as soon as I receive them.
#44But I didn't know that dollar bills have such a hard life!
