#24He turned and walked down the dark tunnel.

#25"'Bring the lantern, Thumbelina,' said Mrs. Grey.

#26"'And stay close to me.'"

#27They followed Mr. Rufus down the dark tunnel.

#28Thumbelina could see only Mrs. Grey's tail ahead of her. Suddenly,

#29Thumbelina saw light up ahead.

#30The tunnel had caved in from above.

#31A beam of sunshine was shining through the hole.

#32A bird lay on the tunnel floor.

#33It was not moving.

#34What happened asked mrs.. Gray?

#35This nasty bird crashed into our tunnel," Mr. Rufus said,

#36poking the bird with his cane.

#37Is the bird dead?

#38asked Mrs. Grey.

#39What shall we do?

#40Thumbelina stepped closer and held the lantern over the bird.

#41Oh, it can't be! She suddenly cried out.

#42It's dreadful, I know.

#43Mr. Rufus said kindly.

#44But don't worry.

#45I've taken care of everything."

#46But the Mole didn't know what really upset Thumbelina.

#47There was a piece of string tied around the bird's leg. It was her friend Pete.

#48"'I've spoken to Slim,' said Mr. Rufus.

#49"'He'll remove the bird in a few days.'"

#50"'Slim?

#51The coyote?' said Mrs. Grey.

#52"'A coyote,' repeated Thumbelina.

#53Slim will take the body, explained Mr. Rufus.

#54Then I can fix the tunnel.

#55Thumbelina stared at the dead bird.

#56My poor friend,

#57she whispered.

#58She began crying.

#59Are you okay, my dear? Asked Mrs. Grey.

#60No, I'm not, cried Thumbelina.

#61She ran back through the dark tunnel, toward Mrs. Gray's house.
