#24As she was leaving, Mrs. Grey whispered to Thumbelina,

#25Mr. Rufus is a fine gentleman

#26and he is very rich.

#28Thumbelina sat next to Mr. Rufus.

#29He did not speak.

#30I hope winter is almost over, Thumbelina said.

#31Winter is never long enough,

#32said Mr. Rufus, with a grunt.

#33But it's so cold, said Thumbelina.

#34Not where I live,

#35said Mr. Rufus,

#36and he grunted again.

#37I live in the deepest hole around here.

#40Thumbelina glanced at his thick glasses.
