#31After breakfast Katie and Joy stepped out into the front yard wearing old jeans and sweatshirts.

#34Look at them!

#35The ground under the trees was covered with walnuts in their green hulls.

#36Grandpa and Magoo came down the driveway with the garden cart.

#37Grandpa lifted two big buckets out of the cart.

#38Here you go, he said.

#39I'll see you two at lunch!

#40The girls pulled on their work gloves.

#41Joy picked up a walnut and threw it in her bucket.

#42That's one!

#43Joy said.

#44Katie tossed a walnut in her bucket.

#45That's two!

#46The twins emptied buckets of walnuts into the cart all morning.

#47By lunchtime the cart was half full.

#48By three o'clock the ground under the first tree was clear.

#49Joy poured her last bucket into the cart.

#50It's full!

#51she shouted.

#52Then she ran toward the house.

#53Dad!

#54The cart is full!

#55Joy and Katie watched eagerly as Dad hitched the cart to the car.

#56Then Katie got in the backseat, and Joy jumped in the front with Dad.

#57They drove out onto Blackberry Road, with the cart bouncing along behind.

#58When they got to the recycling center, Dad backed the cart up to the hulling machine.

#59The twins hopped out of the car.

#60Who collected all these nuts?

#61asked Mr. Ramirez.

#62Joy and I did, said Katie.

#63But they're Joy's nuts.

#64I'm going to use the money I earn to fix my great-grandma's fiddle, said Joy.

#65Dad started shoveling walnuts into the bin, and Mr. Ramirez turned on the huller.

#66It's so noisy!

#67cried Katie.

#68The girls covered their ears and watched the nuts being lifted into the huller.

#69Then they ran around the machine and saw the walnuts shoot out into a big bag.

#70The green hulls were gone.

#71When the first bag got full, Mr. Ramirez put another bag in its place.

#72The second bag filled up and then a third.

#73When the fourth bag was almost half full, the hulling went silent.

#74That's all?

#75said Joy.

#76The whole cart fits into four bags?

#77Let's weigh them and see how you did, said Mr. Ramirez.

#78He peered at the numbers on the scale.

#79That's 170 pounds.

#80So fifteen cents for each pound—that's twenty-five dollars and fifty cents.

#81YIPPEE! cheered Joy.

#82I'm glad you brought your walnuts in early, said Mr. Ramirez.

#83On Monday morning the price drops to thirteen cents.

#85Oh no!

#86cried Joy.
