#26Carlos and his little brother Manny were playing kickball.

#29Emily Morgan was ten years old.

#30Her brother AJ had just finished kindergarten.

#31Luke's bike screeched to a stop beside the girls.

#32Before they could say hello, they heard a loud whistle.

#33It's Mrs. Penkov, said Luke, hopping off his bike.

#34Mrs. Penkov taught science at the high school.

#35Welcome to day camp!

#37she shouted, marching the kids into the community center.

#44She saw tables, chairs, bookshelves, computers, a whiteboard, and a map.

#53This is a special year for our town.

#54In two weeks, it will be Willow Creek's one hundred fiftieth birthday!

#56Mrs. Penkov passed out little houses and buildings cut from colored paper.

#57Let's pin our houses to the map and show everyone where we live, she said.

#58I live here on Walnut Street.

#59She pinned a house to the map.

#60Carlos, Manny, Luke, and Laura pinned their houses on County Road.

#61Emily and AJ put theirs on Blackberry Road.

#62The other kids pinned their houses on the map too.

#63Together they pinned the stores and town buildings to the map.

#64These are the places where people live and work in Willow Creek, said Mrs. Penkov.

#65This is our community!

#66She clapped her hands.

#67The boys and girls clapped and cheered too.

#68Attention, campers!

#69said Mrs. Penkov.

#70Everyone became quiet.

#71Now I have a special project for you.

#72It's called a scavenger hunt.

#74asked Manny.

#75Let me tell you how it works, said Mrs. Penkov.

#76First, we need to split into five teams.

#77Katie and Luke were on a team with Emily and AJ.

#78Let's call our team the Earthworms, said Luke.

#79Joy and Laura were with Carlos and Manny.

#80We'll be the Tornadoes, said Carlos.

#81Excellent! said Mrs. Penkov.

#82Now I'll give each team a list of things to search for right here in Willow Creek!

#83A yard sale announcement, said Luke, reading off the list.

#84A campaign button, read Laura.

#85A calendar of community events, read Joy.

#86Each thing you find will teach you something about our community, said Mrs. Penkov.

#87This looks hard, said Manny.

#88This looks like homework, said Katie.

#89Did I tell you?

#90cried Mrs. Penkov.

#91It's a contest!

#92The team that finds the most things wins a prize.

#95Mrs. Penkov gave each team a shopping bag.
