#2Let's go!
#3He called, and then he and his three sons set out.
#4The elephants marched in different directions.

#6They stomped on grass, crops, tools, and anything else they found.

#8Then, birds flew over the jungle, spreading the news.
#9Food! Food for everyone!
#10Soon, herds of deer, pigs, and porcupines joined the elephants.
#11They all began eating what was left of the crops.
#12Baloo came and found some tasty roots.
#13Delicious!
#14Other animals knocked down barley and drank from the tank of water.
#15Birds flew down for seeds and grain.
#16Monkeys scattered as the python caw slithered into the valley.
#17He was hungry too.
#18On and on, round and round the fields, the elephants marched.
#19Soon, the people in the village grew desperate from hunger.
#20There are no more crops!
#21A villager said,
#22We must look for food in the jungle!
#23A group of people entered the jungle to look for nuts.
#24But shadows with glaring eyes spooked them, and they ran out.
#25By the time the rainy season came, the four elephants had finished their work in the fields.
#26They began marching toward the villager's huts.
#27What are they doing now?
#28Bagheera asked Mowgli.
#29They're going to rip off the huts' roofs!
#30Mowgli said.
#31Most of the villagers had already left to find new homes.
#32Now, it was time for the rest to go.
#33A month later, Mowgli and Bagheera returned to the village.
#34The place was covered with mounds of grass and thick weeds.
#35Six months later, the two of them came back again.
#36By now, the jungle had roared back.
#37It's just as I imagined, Bagheera!
#38Mowgli whispered.
#39The wild jungle had swallowed up every trace of the people's village.
#40After the elephants marched, Mowgli returned to the wolves' cave.
#41He had found a way to punish the villagers for their cruelty.
#42According to the law of the jungle, this punishment settled things.
#43Yet Mowgli was restless and unhappy.
#44He didn't feel hungry, and he rarely slept.
#45What's wrong with me? he wondered.
#46One hot day, Mowgli was splashing in the river,
#47suddenly eager to escape.
#48He took off through the jungle, leaping from tree to tree.
#49He ran all afternoon, singing, swimming and hunting.
#50At last, he found himself in a strange part of the jungle.
#51Near a marsh at the outskirts of a village, he heard several dogs barking.
#52A man-pack!
#53Mowgli thought.
#54Curious, he crept toward the sound of the barking dogs.
#55They were pacing around in front of a hut.
#56Mowgli growled like a wolf, and they instantly stopped barking.
#57Then, a woman came to the door.
#58She wore copper bracelets, and her hair was slightly gray.
#59Who's there? she called.
#60Her voice shook with fear.
#61Is it another jackal? she asked the dogs.
#62As he gazed at her, Mowgli felt himself begin to shake too.
#63The woman looked a bit older, but he knew her voice.
#64In fact, he knew it well.
#65Meswa? he called.
#66He stepped out of the tall grass that had been hiding him.
#67The woman gasped and put a hand on her heart.
#68Nathu? is that you? my son?
