#28Mademoiselle looked again at the people in the audience.

#29They're not alive! she cried in surprise.

#30And indeed they were not.

#31Their bodies were made of pillows and rolled-up blankets.

#32Their spines were broom handles.

#33Their arms and legs were hockey sticks and umbrellas.

#34They were dressed in whatever coats, hats, and gloves the children could find.

#35And their faces were paper masks made by Gerald.

#37Bravo! said Mademoiselle.

#38And she and Eliza clapped.

#39They sat down and the curtain opened.

#40Beauty and the Beast , announced a voice from backstage.

#41The children had spent much time making their costumes and audience.

#42So they'd had little time to rehearse.

#43But they had fun acting out the fairy tale.

#44As Beauty, Mabel wore her princess clothes.

#45As the Beast, Gerald wore some small rugs.

#46Jimmy and Kathleen played all the minor parts.

#47At the end of the second scene, everyone was backstage.

#48You should give me the ring, Mabel said to Gerald.

#49He'd forgotten that it was in his pocket.

#50I'll do it in the next scene.

#51And he did, making the ring part of the play.

#52He told Beauty that the ring was a magic ring.

#53It would give her anything she wished.

#54So to see him again, she simply had to put it on and make her wish.

#55At last they came to the final scene.

#56Beauty was reunited with Beast, who was really a prince.

#57Mademoiselle and Eliza clapped and cheered.

#58Mabel looked at the fake audience members.

#59I wish those creatures we made were alive.

#60We'd get some real applause then.

#61I'm glad they aren't alive, said Gerald.

#62I feel silly when I look at them.

#63And suddenly it happened.

#64There was the sound of more clapping.

#65Seven paper faces were looking eagerly up at the stage.

#66The creatures had come alive!

#67Mademoiselle and Eliza screamed and ran from the room.

#68Give me the ring!

#69Gerald said to Mabel.

#70He put the ring on his finger and cried, I wish those Ugly-Wuglies weren't alive!

#71But nothing changed.

#72Mabel and Gerald followed the creatures out into the hallway.

#73Excuse me, one said to Gerald, can you recommend a good hotel?
