#23I studied science for four years in college, said Dr. Roy.

#24After I graduated, I went to veterinary school.

#27Four years.

#28Then I had to pass a test to get my veterinarian's license.

#29Dr. Roy looked at Buster's hooves.

#30A horse vet has to know stuff that other veterinarians don't, he added.

#31For example, the horse's hoof is like a big toenail.

#32The hoof is hard on the outside, but the inside is easily hurt.

#33Did you go to a different school to learn about horses?

#34No.

#35I worked a lot with horses in veterinary school.

#36Dr. Roy looked in Buster's mouth.

#37Some vets even decide to study a specialty, like horse dentistry or surgery.

#38Wow, Jessica said.

#39Buster coughed and thick liquid ran from his nose.

#40Dr. Roy listened to Buster's throat with the stethoscope.

#41I think Buster has a cold.

#42I'll have to check his temperature to be sure.

#43Horses get colds?

#44Of course.

#45Horses get colds the same way you do—viruses spread from horse to horse.

#46Humans can prevent colds by washing their hands.

#47But horses can't do that!

#48So we prevent horse colds by keeping stalls and water clean.

#49I hate when my nose gets stuffy, Jessica said.

#50I have to breathe through my mouth!

#51Horses can only breathe through their noses, said Dr. Roy.

#52Poor Buster.

#53Jessica stroked the horse's nose.

#54Does he need medicine?

#55Buster just needs rest and lots of water, Dr. Roy said, smiling.

#56Just then Mr. Petersen appeared.

#57Ginger's all ready for you, Jessica!

#59Jessica looked back at Dr. Roy and Buster.

#60When can I ride Buster again?

#61she asked.

#62You can probably ride him again in three to four weeks, Dr. Roy said.

#63He needs at least one week of rest for every day that he had a fever.

#64That's a long time, Jessica said, disappointed.

#65Feel better, Buster.

#66Don't be too sad, Dr. Roy called after her.

#67You'll like Ginger.

#68She's my favorite!
