#17They were moving wooden racks and boxes onto the fei ld.

#19She looked closely at a rack.

#20It held short plastic pipes.

#21Those are fireworks?

#22Nope, the man said.

#23Those are cannons that shoot the fireworks into the sky.

#24He opened a box and took out a brown object wrapped in plastic.

#25It was about the size of a baseball and looked like a little bomb.

#26This is a fri ework shell.

#27What's inside of it?

#28Kaitlyn asked.

#29I'll explain, said the man.

#30He set the shell gently back into the box.

#31Then he bent down and drew a big circle in the dirt.

#32A shell is fliled with little balls of gunpowder.

#33Pyrotechnicians, like me, call these balls 'stars.' He picked up some baseballs and formed a pattern inside the circle with them.

#34The pattern of the stars gives a friework its shape.

#35What gives a fri ework its color?

#36Kaitlyn asked.

#37Magic!

#38The man laughed.

#39Kaitlyn didn't.

#40She really wanted to know the answer!

#41Well, the magic of science, the man added quickly.

#42Pyrotechnicians add chemicals to the gunpowder stars.

#43When these chemicals burn, they make different colors.

#44Like chemicals containing copper, for example—can you guess what color they make when they burn?

#45Kaitlyn pulled a penny from her pocket and glanced at it.

#46Orangish brown?

#47Nope! the man said.

#48Chemicals with copper make blue.

#49Chemicals with calcium make orange.

#50Next the man drew a square attached to the circle.

#51There's even more gunpowder here at the bottom of the shell.

#52He drew a long line from the center of the circle.

#53This is the fuse.

#54It's a string that lights the shell.

#55When the shell is in the cannon, the fuse lights the gunpowder at the bottom of the shell.

#56That explosion pushes the shell out of the cannon and into the air.

#57The shell doesn't burst inside the cannon?

#58Nope.

#59The fuse continues to burn in the air.

#60Finally it explodes the shell and lights the stars.

#61That's when you see the firework in the sky.

#62Awesome, Kaitlyn said.

#63Hmm.

#64I guess you do have a lot to do before tonight.

#65Right.

#66It's a big show with many frieworks!

#67And we have to work carefully and safely.

#68Working with fri eworks is very dangerous.

#69The man helped Kaitlyn gather her baseballs.

#70Are you going to watch the display tonight?

#71he asked, dropping the last baseball into her bucket.

#72Kaitlyn smiled.
