#13The group felt a strong wind blow down from the mountains up ahead.

#14A dark fog filled the sky and then disappeared.

#15The Tang Monk was nervous.

#16Wh-what caused that wind and fog?

#17Relax, Master, said Wukong.

#18I'm sure it was something harmless-maybe some small demons.

#19I'll go check.

#20The monkey walked up the road and around a bend.

#21He heard laughter and looked up.

#22High above the road, a fat monster was sitting on the edge of a cliff.

#23Several little demons sat next to the monster.

#24Wukong flew up to get a closer look.

#25The fat monster appeared to be concentrating.

#26Suddenly . . .

#27A burp as loud as thunder blew down the mountain.

#28The demons giggled and laughed.

#29That was your best burp yet! cried one demon.

#30The monster patted his belly.

#31Yes, I'm proud of that one.

#32Show us the fog again! said another demon.

#33Coming right up! said the monster.

#34He covered one nostril with a finger, closed his eyes, and blew hard.

#35Dark fog poured out of his other nostril.

#36The demons clapped and cheered.

#37The monster smiled and then . . .

#38More wind blew down the mountain.

#39There was a roar of laughter.

#40One demon nearly fell off the cliff.

#41Wukong shook his head.

#42I'm not worried about these demons, he said to himself.

#43They're disgusting but not dangerous.

#44The monkey smiled.

#45It does give me an idea though . . .

#46Wukong returned to his companions, who were waiting alongside the road.

#47Did you see any demons? asked Wujing.

#48Wukong shook his head.

#49The road is safe.

#50Then the monkey pulled Bajie aside.

#51Bajie, he whispered.

#52There's a village up ahead.

#53The people there are preparing a huge feast.

#54I saw vegetables, noodles, tofu, steamed buns, and all sorts of delicious food.

#55I thought maybe you'd like to go before us and start eating.

#56Bajie licked his lips.

#57Thank you for thinking of me, Wukong.

#58I am rather hungry right now.

#59The pig turned to the Tang Monk.

#60Master, I think I should go ahead and check the mountain too.

#61I trust Wukong, of course.

#62But we must protect you, and I'd like to be extra safe.

#63The Tang Monk smiled.

#64I'm impressed, Bajie.

#65Thank you for doing extra work.

#66Bajie winked at Wukong and then headed up the road. * * * Braap!

#67The monster burped again, and another wind blew.

#68Then he blew more fog from one nostril.

#69The demons laughed hysterically.

#70Suddenly there was a loud rumbling sound, and everyone was silent.

#71The monster patted his big belly.

#72I'm hungry.

#73The demons looked at one another.

#74I'm hungry too, said one.

#75It's probably time for lunch, said another.

#76The monster stood up.

#77Let's go down to the road and find some people to eat!

#78The demons cheered and followed the monster down the mountain.

#79When they got to the road, they made themselves look like people.

#80The monster chuckled.

#81The next time someone comes along this road, it's lunchtime!

#82For a few moments, they waited.

#83Then a large pig came around the bend.

#84Hello! said Bajie, smiling.

#85I'm here for the feast!
