#17Wukong turned back into himself.

#18Oh! cried the woman.

#19Wh-who are you?

#20My name is Sun Wukong, said the monkey.

#21Are you the queen?

#22The woman nodded.

#23Your husband sent me to rescue you, said Wukong.

#24The queen's face broke into a smile.

#25Oh, please do!

#26The demon who kidnapped me is horrible-nasty, ugly, smelly!

#27The queen shivered.

#28He said he loves me and wants to . . . m-marry me!

#29The queen started to cry again.

#30Don't worry, Your Majesty, said Wukong.

#31I'll defeat the demon.

#32But first I must figure out how he creates the fire, smoke, and sand.

#33That's simple.

#34The queen sniffed.

#35He has three bells.

#36The first bell makes fire.

#37The second bell makes smoke.

#38And the third bell makes sand.

#39I saw the bells, said Wukong.

#40He wears them around his neck.

#41The monkey smiled.

#42You wait here, Your Majesty.

#43Tonight I'll steal those bells from the demon.

#44Once I defeat him, I'll come back and rescue you.

#45The monkey turned back into a bug and flew down another tunnel.

#46Soon he found a second bedroom.

#47This one was dark and gloomy.

#48This must be the demon's bedroom, thought Wukong.

#49I'll wait here until the demon goes to sleep.

#50He landed on the ceiling and waited.

#51A little while later, the Demon of Power came into the room.

#52Wukong could see the bells tied around the demon's neck.

#53What a busy day, said the demon.

#54I'm tired.

#55The demon climbed into bed and closed his eyes.

#56Soon he was snoring loudly.

#57Wukong turned back into himself.

#58He plucked a few of his hairs and turned them into fleas.

#59The fleas landed on the demon's neck and began biting.

#60The demon scratched at his neck and rolled over.

#61Then he scratched some moreand more.

#62Finally the demon sat up.

#63Why is my neck so itchy? he said.

#64Maybe it's these bells.

#65I'll take them off while I sleep.

#66The demon laid the three bells on a table.

#67A few minutes later he was snoring again.

#68The fleas turned back into hairs and returned to Wukong.

#69Next the monkey turned the hairs into three fake bells.

#70He put them on the table and stuck the real bells in his robe.

#71He looked at the sleeping demon.

#72It's too dangerous to use these bells inside, thought the monkey.

#73I'll get the demon to come outside, and then I'll fight him.

#74Wukong became invisible and ran back through the tunnel.

#75A guard was sleeping next to the cave entrance.

#76Wukong sneaked past him.

#77Once he was outside, the monkey shouted.

#78Return the queen right now!

#79If you don't, I'll smash your entire mountain!
