#1The Meditation Contest challenge you to a meditation contest, Isaid the Tiger Immortal.
#2Whoever can meditate the longest without moving is the winner.
#3Wukong gulped.
#4I used to meditate a lot, he thought.
#5But I haven't done it lately.
#6I'm terrible at sitting still.
#7The Tang Monk stepped forward.
#8I accept your challenge.
#9Master, are you sure? asked Wujing.
#10The Tang Monk nodded.
#11I've spent many years meditating.
#12This contest will be easy for me.
#13The Tiger Immortal grinned.
#14This won't be an ordinary meditation contest.
#15We will float in the air and meditate.
#16Can you do that?
#17Now the Tang Monk looked nervous.
#18But before the monk could answer, Wukong clapped him on the back.
#19Of course the Tang Monk can float in the air, the monkey replied.
#20Then he whispered into the monk's ear.
#21Don't worry, Master.
#22You just meditate.
#23I'll handle everything else.
#24What are you babbling about? snapped the Tiger Immortal.
#25Let's start the contest.
#26The Tiger Immortal and the Tang Monk went in front of the crowd.
#27They sat down with their legs crossed and their palms facing up.
#28They closed their eyes and started meditating.
#29After a moment the Tiger Immortal slowly floated up into the air.
#30Uh-oh, said Bajie.
#31Master can't do that.
#32He'll lose the contest.
#33Don't worry, said Wukong.
#34He just needs some help from me.
#35The monkey recited a spell and then blew toward the Tang Monk.
#36The monk lifted off the ground.
#37His eyes remained closed.
#38Soon he was floating next to the Tiger Immortal.
#39I think Master will win this contest, said Wujing.
#40I'm pretty good at meditating too, said Bajie.
#41I could have competed in this contest.
#42Wukong smirked.
#43It would take a lot of magic to lift you, Bajie.
#44The pig snorted.
#45Master's face is twitching! said Wujing suddenly.
#46Uh-oh, said Bajie.
#47I wonder what's wrong.
#48Maybe he has a headache, said Wujing.
#49This isn't good.
#50If the monk moves at all, he will lose the contest.
#51Wukong looked up at the Tang Monk.
#52I think he has an itch, said the monkey.
#53Wait here.
#54Wukong became invisible and flew up to the monk.
#55A flea was crawling on the monk's head.
#56Hmm, thought Wukong.
#57Why would a flea be on the Tang Monk?
#58He has no hair.
#59The monkey bit his lip.
#60The Tiger Immortal must have used magic to put this flea here.
#61That rotten cheater!
#62Wukong brushed the flea away and scratched the Tang Monk's head.
#63The monk's face stopped twitching.
#64Now I'll teach the Tiger Immortal a lesson, thought Wukong.
#65The monkey plucked one of his hairs and turned it into a centipede.
#66He dropped the centipede onto the Tiger Immortal's head.
#67The Tiger Immortal's ear twitched as the centipede crawled over it.
#68Then the centipede crawled along his mouth.
#69The Tiger Immortal's lip curled slightly.
#70His nose wrinkled.
#71Next the centipede crawled on the Tiger Immortal's nose.
#72The Tiger Immortal sniffed.
#73And then . . .
#74Ouch! cried the Tiger Immortal.
#75Something bit me!
#76He lost his concentration and fell, hitting the ground with a puff of smoke.
#77When the smoke cleared, a dead tiger lay on the ground.
#78The crowd gasped.
#79Wukong and the Tang Monk came back down.
#80The crowd was silent.
#81Daoists and Buddhists all stared at one another.
#82The monkey cleared his throat.
#83The Tiger Immortal was just an evil tiger spirit.
#84Now that he's gone, I want you Daoists to treat the Buddhists kindly.
#85Everybody should live together peacefully.
