#22Both Tang Monks fell to their knees, shaking with fear.

#24The monkey sighed.

#25He turned to Bajie and Wujing.

#26What can we do?

#27I have an idea, said Bajie, smiling.

#29What is it? asked Wukong.

#30The two Tang Monks should recite the Tight Headband spell, said the pig.

#31Only the Tang Monk, Guanyin, and Buddha know the spell.

#32We'll know right away which Tang Monk is fake.

#33You just want to see me in pain! said Wukong.

#34Then he sighed.

#35But it is a good idea.

#36Bajie and Wujing stood near the monks.

#37Master, recite the Tight Headband spell, said Wukong.

#38Both monks began speaking, and Wukong fell to the floor.

#39It hurts! he cried.

#40Bajie watched the Tang Monks carefully.

#41One of them was reciting the spell.

#42But the other one wasn't.

#43This is the fake Tang Monk! shouted the pig, pointing.

#45The real monk stopped reciting the spell.

#46Bajie and Wujing tried to grab the fake monk.

#47But the monk changed into a green lion and ran out of the throne room.

#49He and his companions chased the lion.

#50Outside, the lion leaped into the air.

#51Wukong and the others shot after him.

#52Clouds swirled, and soon they had the lion surrounded.

#53Wukong pulled out his iron bar and raised it to strike.

#54Just then a deep voice called out, Do not hit him, Sun Wukong!

#55Everyone looked up.

#56It's the bodhisattva Manjusri! said Wukong.

#57This green lion is my pet, said the bodhisattva.

#58The king of the Black Rooster Kingdom was cruel to someone many years ago.

#59So my lion came to Earth to punish him.

#60The king's punishment is over now.

#61The bodhisattva and the lion disappeared above the clouds.

#62That night the king of the Black Rooster Kingdom hosted a feast.

#63During the feast he turned to the Tang Monk.

#64Thank you for your help.

#65I hope you will reach the Western Paradise very soon.

#66* * * Weeks passed, and the travelers continued west.

#67One day Wukong saw a mysterious red cloud over the mountains ahead.

#68Stop walking, he said quietly.

#69What's wrong? asked the Tang Monk.

#70The red cloud disappeared.

#71Wukong shook his head.

#72Nothing, Master.

#73I thought I saw a red cloud.

#74They walked some more.

#75Wukong saw the red cloud again.

#76He held up his hand for the others to stop.

#77The red cloud disappeared once again, and Wukong started to walk again.

#78But then the red cloud reappeared.

#79Stop, said the monkey.

#80The Tang Monk groaned.

#81Wukong, should we keep going or not?
