#40Then, in the midst of all the trees, he saw a pagoda.

#41This is a strange place for a pagoda, he thought.

#42Maybe we can all stay here tonight.

#43The Tang Monk went to the door of the pagoda and opened it.

#44He gasped.

#45A monster was sleeping inside!

#46The monster had a purple beard and long, sharp fangs.

#47The Tang Monk tried to walk away, but the monster woke up.

#48Who's there? called the monster.

#49He stood up.

#50The Tang Monk turned around, shaking with fear.

#51Sorry to wake you, he said.

#52I, uh . . .

#53The monster came closer and smiled.

#54You're a monk, he said.

#55He licked his lips.

#56Y-yes, said the Tang Monk.

#57I'm from the T-Tang Empire.

#58I . . .

#59The monster's eyes lit up.

#60You're the Tang Monk! * * * Meanwhile Wujing stomped toward Bajie's voice.

#61He peered behind some bushes and saw the pig fast asleep.

#63He was talking in his sleep.

#66Wujing kicked the pig.

#68Bajie jumped to his feet, wiping drool from the side of his mouth.
