#1The Greatest Idea Ever aybe Molly was right, I thought when MI got home.
#2Maybe I was inventing stories.
#3Still I knew what I had heard.
#4My mom had clearly said, I'll have to rob a bank .
#5I didn't invent that.
#6I'd heard her say those words with my very own ears!
#7Mom finally did serve dinner that night, but it was just cold sandwiches.
#8And she definitely seemed worried about something.
#9As we sat at the table eating, she stared off into space.
#10Mom, what are you thinking about?
#11I asked suddenly.
#12What? she said, startled.
#13I repeated my question.
#14What are you thinking about?
#15I was just thinking about all the bills I have to pay, said Mom.
#16My stomach did a little flip.
#17So you're really worried about money?
#18Iggy, stop being weird, said Tate.
#19My mother patted my hand.
#20You should be thinking about homework, Iggy, not bills, she said.
#21Then she quickly started talking about something else.
#22I got up early the next day to walk to school with Josh.
#23He likes to get there early, and this morning I needed to talk to him.
#24I got downstairs just as Josh was headed out the door.
#25Can I walk to school with you?
#26I asked.
#27I have something I want to tell you.
#28Sure, said Josh.
#29I'm worried about my mom, I blurted out as we started walking.
#30Why? asked Josh.
#31I think she needs money, I said.
#32She's worried about paying bills.
#33My dad worries about bills too, said Josh.
#34We walked past the Green Apple Supermarket.
#35That's where Josh and Jenny's dad works.
#36He brings home lots of food for dinner, like steak and apple pie.
#37So Josh didn't have to worry about having good dinners either!
#38My dad even works on the weekends, to make extra money for our family, Josh went on.
#39He performs magic shows.
#40He's working on a new trick using a one-way mirror.
#41What's a one-way mirror?
#42I asked.
#43It's a mirror on one side, explained Josh.
#44But on the other side, you can see through it, like glass.
#45Oh, I said, nodding.
#46I was pretty sure I'd seen mirrors like that on TV police shows.
#47Maybe I could invent a money-making machine, I said, thinking out loud.
#48I could print thousands of dollar bills, and then we'd be rich!
#49Josh stopped and looked at me.
#50Iggy, that's the worst idea in the world!
#51Boy, I thought.
#52Josh either really likes an idea, or he really doesn't like it!
#53What's wrong with a money-printing machine?
#54I asked him.
#55Printing money is a crime, said Josh.
#56If you invent a money-printing machine, you could go to jail!
#57I echoed.
#58Oh well.
#59Forget that invention then.
#60A second later Josh and I passed the candy store near school.
#61My mouth watered as I looked at all the delicious candy.
#62I really wish I were rich now, I murmured.
#63Then I could buy this whole candy store!
#64I dug into my pocket and found some change.
#65Josh had some too.
#66Together, we had enough to buy a chocolate candy bar.
#67We decided to save it for lunchtime.
#68If only I knew what my mom was thinking, I said as we walked on.
#69Then I would know what to do.
#70Josh shook his head.
#71Grown-ups are pretty mysterious.
#72You'd need a really great invention to figure them out!
#73That's when I got my greatest idea ever.
#74What if I could invent a magic thinking box?
#75Then I'd be able to read people's thoughts!
