#20Aladdin said the words again.

#21Nothing happened.

#22The magic words do not work, said Aladdin.

#23He walked back through the chamber, climbed back up the steps, and sat down.

#24I did everything Uncle told me to do.

#25I found the lamp and brought it back.

#26Aladdin shook his head.

#27I would have given the lamp to Uncle.

#28He sighed.

#29Why didn't he help me up the last step?

#30Aladdin took a glass apple from his pocket.

#31I wish I could trade this for a real apple.

#32I'm so hungry.

#33Many hours went by, and he couldn't do anything but think.

#34Magrib is not my uncle at all, Aladdin finally decided.

#35He is a liar an evil magician.

#36And I think he left me here to die.

#37A tear rolled down the boy's cheek.

#38When he raised his hand to wipe it away, he saw the ring on his finger.

#39He laughed a sad, little laugh.

#40My uncle Magrib put this ring on my finger.

#41He said it would protect me from danger and fear.

#42Well, I am in danger right now!

#43And I am very afraid!

#44So that was a lie too.

#45This ring is useless!

#46Angry now, Aladdin decided to throw the ring away, but it was tight on his finger.

#47So he began to pull and twist the ring.

#48He couldn't get it off, but a cloud of bright smoke appeared.

#49Within seconds, the smoke disappeared, and a funny, little man stood there!

#50He wore wide pants and a cap with tiny bells hanging along the edge.

#51His skin was the color of dried apricots.

#52The genie of the ring has come! squeaked the fellow.

#53The bells on his cap jingled.

#54The one who wears the ring is my master!

#55Ask me for anything and I will do it.

#56I am your slave!

#57Aladdin had never seen a genie before.

#58He thought a genie would be tall and have big muscles.

#59This genie was smaller than Aladdin, and he was skinny.

#60Aladdin jumped to his feet, laughing with surprise and joy.

#61I can ask for anything?

#62Then get me out of here!

#63Your wish is my command! said the genie.

#64Suddenly the light became so bright that Aladdin had to shut his eyes!

#65But then slowly he opened one eye, and then he opened the other.

#66He looked to the left, and he looked to the right.

#67He opened his eyes wider and looked up into the bright, blue sky.
