#24Holding his cap, he ran to a large door just ahead of him.

#25My name is Aladdin! he shouted.

#26I command you to open!

#27The door swung open, and Aladdin stepped into a beautiful garden.

#28The air smelled like sweet flowers and ripe fruit.

#29He looked up.

#30Oranges! he said.

#31Lemons and limes!

#32Pears and plums!

#33Aladdin was getting hungry.

#34He wished he could eat one of the plums.

#35Then his face lit up.

#36Uncle said I can pick all the fruit I want when I have the lamp, he thought.

#37The garden path was right under his feet.

#38One, two, three, he said, counting his steps as he walked between the trees.

#39Exactly one hundred steps later, Aladdin arrived at the ladder.

#40He looked up.

#41The top was hidden high in the treetops.

#42Slowly, Aladdin climbed.

#43When he got to the top, the hole in the wall was in shadow.

#44But Aladdin could see the lamp hanging from a chain.

#45He reached in, took it, and held it in his hands.

#46It's just a dirty, old brass lamp, he said, shaking his head.

#47I don't want to mess up my jacket.

#48So Aladdin wrapped the lamp in his sash and tucked it in his back pocket.

#49Then he climbed back down the ladder.

#50Now, he said, I'll get something to eat.

#51But when Aladdin stepped to the ground, he couldn't believe what he saw.

#52The oranges, lemons, and limes were gone.

#53The pears and plums were gone too.

#54Instead, the fruit trees were covered with sparkling jewels.

#55The fruit has turned to glass! said Aladdin.

#56He picked a bright-red jewel off a tree.

#57I can't eat this, he said with a shrug.

#58But it's pretty.

#59I'll pick the glass fruit and take it to Mother.

#60Aladdin was young, and he had always been poor.

#61He didn't know these were precious gems-emeralds, diamonds, and rubies.

#62They weren't glass at all.

#63He began stuffing the jewels into the pockets of his jacket and pants until they bulged.

#64Now, I must return to my uncle, he told himself.

#65He hurried through the golden chamber and started up the steps toward Magrib.

#66Aladdin's load was so heavy that he could barely climb the stone stairway.

#67And when he had almost reached the top, he could not get up the last step, which was taller than the others.

#68Uncle, he called out.
