#21No one needs us, and we are all alone.

#22Patrasche put his head upon the young boy's chest.

#23There were great tears in the dog's sad brown eyes.

#24The two friends lay close together in the freezing air.

#25The cathedral's stone floor was as cold as snow.

#26They fell asleep, and together they dreamed.

#27They dreamed of happier days when they chased each other through the fields, played with little Alois, or watched boats sail on the canal.

#28Suddenly, pale rays of white light broke through the darkness.

#29It was the moon.

#30The snow had stopped falling and the clouds had slipped away.

#31The moon's light shone through the high windows in the cathedral's arches.

#32Ruben's great paintings looked down on the still bodies on the stone floor.

#33Curtains usually covered the two pictures on either side of the altar.

#34When Nello had first entered in the dark, he had pulled the curtains aside.

#35The two paintings were Rubens' The Elevation of the Cross and The Descent from the Cross .

#36For one moment, they were both visible in the moonlight.

#37Nello stood up.

#38He stared at the paintings with joy and awe.

#39Tears fell from his eyes.

#40He cried out, I have seen them at last!

#42He fell back down and pulled himself close to Patrasche.

#44The next morning, they were dead.
