#17Then they raced to the fields and played hide-and-seek in the long cornflowers.

#18Later they lay down, exhausted.

#19Alois took a little nap, and Patrasche laid his head in her lap.

#20Nello found a clean piece of pine wood and took out a stick of charcoal.

#21He started to draw a small portrait of Alois and Patrasche.

#22Nello drew quickly and confidently.

#23He drew Alois' dark hair falling on her bright cheeks.

#24He drew Patrasche's golden fur shining in the sun.

#25Behind them, a patch of flowers tilted in the breeze.

#26Alois' father, the miller, came walking into the field.

#27He was a good man, but was a strict father.

#28When he saw the portrait, tears came to his eyes.

#29It captured his daughter's likeness perfectly.

#30It was beautiful.

#31The miller told Alois to go home.

#32Your mother wants you, he said.

#33But Daddy, I'm having fun!

#34Alois protested.

#35Obey your father, the miller said roughly.

#36The miller snatched the wood from Nello's hands and looked at it closely.

#37Do you make drawings of my daughter a lot? he asked.

#38His voice trembled.

#39Nello blushed and hung his head.

#40I draw everything I see, he murmured.

#41The miller was silent.

#42He thought about Nello and his life of poverty.

#43Then the miller held out a coin.

#44Drawing is a foolish pastime, he said.

#45But the picture is like Alois.

#46It will please her mother.

#47Take this coin and I will take the picture.

#48Nello stopped blushing.

#49He lifted his head and put his hands behind his back.

#50Keep the money and keep the portrait, Master Cogez, he said simply.

#51You have often been good to me.

#52Then Nello called Patrasche.

#53Together they walked home across the field.

#54With that coin, I might have seen the master's paintings, he said to Patrasche.

#55But I could not sell her picture not even for them.
